The right time to hire for UX Design

I get this question a lot:

We are building a new software tool, and the developer has built out some of it. Should we now hire a UX Designer to fix up the design?

Or should you instead hire a designer at the beginning of the project?

Well, the answer is: it depends on many factors.

In this article, we’ll explore the three times along with your project that you’d want to consider bringing in a UX Designer.

Nussi Explaining:

1) Hiring a UX Designer before development

This is the optimal time to hire a designer; this will save you the most stress and confusion usually involved with building technology.

Getting your product designed and tested before it hits development ensures you the smoothest development and launch journey.

Do you agree?

2) Hiring a UX Designer only after launching your MVP

Many tech founders take this route.

Usually, when building out the initial version of your software tool, you might not have the funds or resources for a professional design.

My advice:

  1. First launch the product
  2. Get some live critical feedback
  3. Get some paid users
  4. Then hire designers to create the stable version

In what stage are you in now?

3) Hiring a designer after your tech product has market adoption

This is another intelligent route I see tech founders take.

At first, they scribble the design on paper, give developers to build and release it to the market.

They keep on improving/adding features for the next while.

After they know more about the users/market needs, they will then hire a professional UX designer or agency — to hit-the-ball-out-of-the-park with version 2.0!
